Updated 2026-11-08Draft
A draft for review before public launch.
The short version
What you put in Salty is yours. Only you can see it: not your department, your officers, your crew or other Salty users, on any plan.
Salty never sells your data. Salty shows no ads and has no ad trackers.
You can export everything or delete your account at any time, inside the app.
What Salty collects
Salty keeps only what it needs to work for you:
- Your account: the email address you sign in with.
- What you enter: your profile, rotation and Kelly rule, the days you change, personal events, trades, certs, time balances, sleep, workouts, check-ins, exposure entries and any feedback you send.
- Your chats with Salty, and Salty's answers.
- Your crews: the crews you're in, the messages and photos you post there, and reports you file.
- Links you make under Family share and Calendar link.
- The devices that get your pings: a push address for each phone or browser you turn pings on for.
- Health and fitness data, only if you connect Apple Health or Health Connect (below).
- A usage log of counts and labels, such as "signed up" or "rotation confirmed", and for each Salty answer its topic label, size, cost and timing. These logs never hold what you typed.
- Ordinary request logs kept for a short time by the companies that host Salty: your IP address, browser and the address of the page you opened (which can include a share link's address).
How Salty uses it
To run the tools you use, answer your questions, send the pings you turn on, keep your account secure, stop abuse and fix problems.
Salty doesn't use your data for advertising, doesn't build profiles of you for anyone else and doesn't use your data to train AI models.
Who can see your data
Only you. No department, chief, officer or other Salty user can read your profile, calendar, chats with Salty, health and training data, exposure log, time balances, trades, certs or notes, and no setting changes that. If a department pays for Salty one day, it still won't own your account or see any of it.
This is enforced in the database itself: each account can reach only its own rows.
The exceptions are the ones you make. Messages you post in a crew are read by everyone in that crew, including Salty's replies when someone asks it there. A Family share link shows working and off days and nothing else. A Calendar link shows your shifts and events to the calendar app you add it to. You can turn either link off at any time.
Your data sits on Salty's servers so it's there on any device you sign in on. The people who maintain the service can reach the database to keep it running.
Salty discloses data only when the law requires it, such as a valid court order.
Salty's AI
Salty's answers are written by Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. When you ask Salty something, your message and what it needs to answer (such as the earlier messages in that chat and the parts of your own data it looks up) go to Anthropic to write the reply. When someone asks Salty in a crew, the recent crew messages go with it.
Anthropic handles this under its commercial terms, which don't allow it to train its models on what Salty sends.
Health and fitness data
With your permission, the Salty iPhone app reads from Apple Health and the Salty Android app reads from Health Connect: sleep (with stages and wake-ups when your watch records them), resting heart rate, heart rate variability, steps, active energy and workouts. On Android it also reads the distance covered during workouts, and past data, so your first sync can bring in about ten weeks.
Your phone turns these into one summary a day; the individual readings stay on your phone. Salty stores the summaries and your workouts in your account to work out your readiness and training load and to coach you.
Only you can see them: not your department, your officers, your crew or other Salty users, on any plan. Salty never uses health data for advertising, marketing or data mining, never shares it with anyone for those purposes and never writes to Apple Health or Health Connect.
You can turn it off at any time in the app (Coach, Health, then Apple Health or Health Connect) and choose to delete what it sent; deleting your account deletes all of it. You can also change what Salty may read in the Health app on your iPhone or in Health Connect's settings on Android.
Sleep and workouts you type in yourself sit behind the same wall.
Who helps run Salty
A few companies run parts of Salty for it. They handle your data only to provide that service:
- Vercel hosts the app and runs its servers.
- Supabase holds the database, sign-in, sign-in emails and crew photos.
- Anthropic writes Salty's AI answers (above).
- Apple and Google deliver pings to iPhones and Android phones, and your browser's maker delivers pings to a browser. A ping carries a short line, such as the crew, who posted and the start of the message (you can hide the message text in your ping settings).
Salty never sells your data
Salty never sells your data. It doesn't rent it, trade it or share it with advertisers, data brokers or analytics companies.
How long Salty keeps it
Until you delete it or delete your account. When you delete your account, everything in it goes right away, the usage log too, and copies in the database's backups roll off after a short time.
Crew messages are your choice when you delete: they go with your account, or they stay in each crew shown as from a former member. Photos are always deleted.
Export and delete
Under Me, Privacy and data you can download everything Salty has about your account in one file, and delete your account. Deleting can't be undone, so export first if you want a copy.
To ask about your data, correct something you can't change in the app, or use a privacy right the law gives you where you live, contact Salty (below). Using a right never changes how Salty treats you.
Security
Everything travels encrypted, and the database's own rules keep each account to its own data. AI keys and other secrets stay on Salty's servers, never in the app on your phone. No system is perfect; if your data is ever exposed, Salty will tell you as the law requires.
Children
Salty is made for adults in the fire service. It isn't meant for children under 13, and Salty doesn't knowingly collect their data. If a child under 13 has an account, contact Salty and it will be deleted.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the date at the top changes. A change to what Salty collects or who sees it will be shown in the app before it takes effect.
